What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are a modern solution for replacing missing teeth, offering a blend of functionality, durability, and aesthetics. Here’s a summary of what dental implants are and how they function:

The Implant Process

  1. Initial Assessment:
The process begins with a thorough examination to assess your oral health and determine if you are a suitable candidate for implants.

  2. Implant Placement:
The implant, resembling a small screw, is surgically placed into the jawbone where the tooth is missing. This implant will fuse with your jawbone, providing stable support for artificial teeth.

  3. Healing Period:
After the implant is placed, a healing period is necessary for osseointegration to occur, which can take several weeks to a few months.

  4. Custom Tooth Creation:
Once the implant has bonded with the jawbone, a small connector post, called an abutment, is attached to the implant to securely hold the new tooth. An artificial tooth (crown) is created and then attached to the abutment, completing the process.

Frequently Asked Questions

You have a question? We have an answer.

What are dental implants?
Dental implants are artificial tooth roots, usually made from titanium, that provide a permanent base for fixed replacement teeth. They are an alternative to dentures or bridgework that don’t fit well and offer a welcome option for lost teeth.
How long does the implant process take?
The process can vary depending on individual circumstances, but generally, it involves several stages spread over a few months. After the implant is placed into the jawbone, a period of healing (osseointegration) is required, which can take from a few weeks to a few months. Once healed, additional fittings for the artificial tooth or teeth are made.
Are dental implants painful?
Most people who have received dental implants say that there is very little discomfort involved in the procedure. Local anesthesia is used during the procedure, and most patients report that implants involve less pain than a tooth extraction. After the procedure, mild soreness can be treated with over-the-counter pain medications.
Can anyone get dental implants?
In most cases, anyone healthy enough to undergo a routine dental extraction or oral surgery can be considered for a dental implant. Patients should have healthy gums and enough bone to hold the implant. They also must be committed to good oral hygiene and regular dental visits.
How successful are dental implants?
Success rates of dental implants vary, depending on where in the jaw the implants are placed. However, in general, dental implants have a success rate of up to 98%. With proper care (similar to the care of natural teeth), implants can last a lifetime.
