Dental Hygiene Services

Our Oral Hygiene Services

We recognise the foundational role of dental hygiene in overall oral health. Our dental hygienists are not just experts in cleaning teeth, they are passionate educators dedicated to helping you maintain a healthy mouth. Our hygiene services focus on thorough cleaning while providing personalised guidance on effective oral care practices.

What does a dental hygienist do?

A dental hygienist specialises in helping patients keep their teeth and mouth clean. They will remove plaque and calculus/tartar off your teeth. Plaque is the soft broken down bits of food. Calculus or tartar is the hard yellowish deposits stuck to your teeth that your toothbrush will be unable to remove. The process of removing plaque and calculus/tartar off your teeth is often called a ‘scale and polish’.

Usually, an appointment can last anything from 30-60 minutes. Although this depends on how much there is to clean, how many teeth you have, how long it has been since your last teeth cleaning appointment.

How often should I see a dental hygienist?

You should see your hygienist twice a year or every 6 months. We use our teeth everyday, so twice a year is not that much when you think about it. Your teeth will get a really good clean and polish –  removing the stains and build up that is too sticky for your tooth brush or too hard to get to.

The frequency of seeing your hygienist will also depend on how well you keep your teeth clean at home and also how severe your gum disease is. Remember, we want you to keep your teeth – if the gums aren’t healthy, then your teeth can get loose.

Frequently Asked Questions

You have a question? We have an answer.

How often should I get a professional dental cleaning?

Most patients benefit from a professional cleaning every six months, but we tailor recommendations based on individual needs.

Will the cleaning process be painful?

Our hygienists are trained to perform cleanings gently. While some may experience mild discomfort, most find the process pain-free.

Can dental hygiene treatments prevent gum disease?

Regular hygiene treatments are crucial in preventing gum disease by removing plaque and tartar that contribute to gum infections.

Is a professional cleaning necessary if I brush and floss regularly?

Yes, professional cleanings remove calculus and hard-to-reach plaque that regular brushing and flossing can miss.

How can I maintain my oral hygiene between professional cleanings?

We recommend consistent brushing twice a day, flossing daily, and using mouthwash as advised by your hygienist.
